The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

The books is correct in every respect: it has all the necessary ingredients, lots of research of the seventeenth century Amsterdam has gone into it and it is apparent; it has diverse characters and thoughtful themes of in/tolerance, conventions and freedom struggling to see the light of day in a world shackled in puritan culture.

But for me the book lacked spirit. There was no soul in it. Still a very good and captivating story and the sense of the young heroine being lost and overwhelmed by the grand city of Amsterdam is exquisitely conveyed.
